Kai Strobel is a newly appointed professor of percussion at the Academy of Music in Lugano. He was also the 2019 1st prize winner of the ARD Music Competition and the 2018 winner of the Audience Award and winner of the 1st prize of the TROMP Percussion Competition Eindhoven. He is one of the shooting stars of the younger generation of percussionists.
Kai received his first lessons from Marta Klimasara in Stuttgart and from 2012 studied percussion at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz with Leonhard Schmidinger and Bogdan Bacanu. As a soloist, he has performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Lübeck Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra Reutlingen, the Asko-Schönberg Orchestra, the Musicum Collegium Basel and the Orchestra of the St. Petersburg State Orchestra, among others.
Since 2021, Kai has been a visiting professor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
By arranging for his ensembles, Kai not only expands the percussion literature, rather he incorporates the musical-historical background of composers and the tonal language of older instruments into his arrangements, once again demonstrating the multi-layered possibilities of percussion. His arrangements of works by Claude Debussy have already been successfully published.
